American Goldfinch

Carduelis tristis

Photographed January 31, 2007, Franklin Parish, LA

Specifically a wintering male American Goldfinch, possibly immature; Breeding male bright yellow with white rump, black forehead, white edges on black wings and tail, and yellow at bend of wing.  Female and winter male duller and grayer, with black wings, tail, and white wing bars.

Their range is from southern British Columbia east to Newfoundland, and south to California, Utah, southern Colorado, central Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Carolinas.  Winters in much of the United States.

This particular bird photographed seemed young.  He wasn't the most graceful bird at the feeder and was knocked off balance quite easily.
